Where to eat in Zurich? Our best restaurant tips

This is the place to go for a delicious meal in Zurich

Looking for Zürich restaurant tips? When you normally think about Switzerland the first thing that comes to mind are the usual clichés: Mountains, watches, banks, chocolate and the for many Germans funny Schwiizerdütsch. Recently, I had the chance to broaden my horizons on the subject of 'Switzerland' and was allowed to discover Zurich in a somewhat different, primarily culinary way.

For an entire weekend, it was all about tasting, snacking, getting to know each other and always a hearty "En Guete".

Enjoy my Zurich Food Guide and don't say I didn't warn you if you bring home a few holiday kilos on your hips.

Breakfast in Zurich

(+ Hotel tip: 25 hours Hotel)

A new 25h Hotel had opened in Zurich just a few days before my visit. Directly on the famous Langstrasse, it is now the second hotel in Zurich that can easily compete with its well-known brothers in Vienna, Hamburg or Berlin.

In addition to individual furnishings, guests can also make use of the hotel's own mini rental cars or rental bicycles for those who prefer a sportier lifestyle.

Anyone who has ever stayed in a 25h hotel knows that you can always expect 1A quality and super service here.

I was allowed to move into a nice double room and after a look in the middle of the room, I took the precaution of taking a few extra minutes the next morning. A huge Raindance shower was my absolute highlight.

Those who know me know: I LOVE breakfast, in fact I could eat breakfast all day long and keep alternating sweet and savoury. Because of me, you don't need lunch or dinner, when a good breakfast already absolutely satisfies all cravings.

So I was all the happier when I heard that one of my favourite restaurants is also running the kitchen at 25h in Zurich. NENI offers Israeli cuisine with a light touch to cross-over. Absolutely perfect for a good start to the day. But late risers will surely find what they're looking for on the evening menu. And for night owls, there's a chic bar where not only hotel guests party. The highballs are highly recommended.

Anyone with a hearty appetite? Then let's go to the Steinfels Brewery (I would avoid driving there, it is a brewery after all). Here you can get your fill of burgers and beer.

The brewery brews different beers seasonally in small quantities, from light and drinkable to heavy. Whether lager, pilsner or wheat...everything here is really homemade, and you can taste it.

A business lunch is also available here over lunch, so it's perfect for a stop after a long walk through Zurich West, which has been experiencing a mighty upswing for a few years now and comes across as a bit more down-to-earth than the famous shore on Lake Zurich.

I had to leave room in my stomach for all my other stops, so I only had tasting glasses of beer.

But it's really something to see and taste, and if you're interested in the art of brewing, you can watch the master brewers at work. The production area is only separated from the guest room by a pane of glass. Cheers!

Les Halles - Market Hall and Bar

A shabby hall crammed with old chairs and tables, lots of knick-knacks, bicycles, TVs showing bicycle races whenever possible, an integrated mini supermarket and a busy restaurant serving mainly French cuisine...Oh I like that, this is where I belong, this is where I want to stay.

Les Halles" in Zurich is particularly appealing to me. I like a wild mix, something that doesn't look like a concept but then comes together naturally.

It's genuine and exudes charm and cosiness. Here, students meet bankers, rounds of girls meet romantic couples and a few tourists sit in between to eat mussels. Don't worry, if you're not so keen on shellfish, you're sure to find a suitable alternative on the menu or in one of the numerous display cases.

In the back of the old industrial hall there is a small shop with Italian and French specialities, even open until 11 pm and of course all organic. By the way, this is all in "Les Halles" and if it's not, it's explicitly stated - I praise that.

So to all bike lovers, connoisseurs of French cuisine and everyone who likes things authentic: Go to "Les Halles", buy a vintage bike, eat something and watch the hustle and bustle, it feels so good.

Welcome to food heaven. In one of the many arches of an old drawbridge in Zurich is a beautiful market hall. Here you can really get all the ingredients for a perfect menu and the matching flowery decoration for the table is on top.

Since shopping is known to make you hungry, you can not only buy many delicious things in the market hall, but also dine on the spot.

You can eat nicely in your own restaurant from morning to night, but most of the stalls also offer snacks for in-between hunger pangs or for tasting. Please allow plenty of time to look at, smell and taste everything!

I especially liked the project of St. Jakob, a bakery that offers bread as well as cakes and chocolates. And the best thing is, whoever buys here also does something good. St. Jakob is a social enterprise that works to integrate and employ people with disabilities. It couldn't be better.

Fred Jacobi has opened the first bar with cold-pressed juices in Zurich. Simply perfect for the start of the day. The juices are pressed directly one floor below and through a glass pane in the floor you can watch the guys in production from the counter.

In addition to the super tasty juices and the in-house almond milk (definitely try it), there are shakes, coffee, acai bowls, porridge and bagels. As the queen of healthy things, I was more than happy here, detox has never been so easy.

In times of low carb, many people forget the best and most traditional thing on the dinner table. Quite simply good bread. John Baker goes back to the basics and produces simply honest, good bread.

Here, organic is not mentioned separately, because that should be a matter of course by now. But John Baker doesn't just offer bread. There are also sweet pastries, sandwiches (next time, I definitely want to try the pastrami sandwich, it flirted with me so much), the famous Swiss Gipfleli and everything else you would expect from a good bakery.

It's all available to take away, and you even get a discount if you bring your own bag back, but you can also enjoy John's creations on the spot in the adjacent café. By the way, at weekends there is a long queue in front of the shop - always a good sign of quality.

So show up early or plan enough time. If you're too lazy to queue yourself, you can also order from John and get your bread delivered by bike. And now a little declaration of love: Thank you John Baker for the olive bread! I can't put into words how incredibly good it was.

I would have loved to stay in the bakery and keep eating it all day. Luckily, the bread is available for purchase, which means everyone can enjoy it.

Bebek is an international restaurant. Many nationalities work together here from morning to night, but the cuisine is dominated by fine dishes from Turkey and Lebanon.

The well-known meze are served with meat or vegetarian, and there are also vegan options. I can especially recommend the köfte kebabs and the homemade falafel.

The nice thing about meze is that it's best to sit down at a table in a large group and everyone can try everything. So quickly pack up your loved ones and head to the Kaltbreite cooperative to dine together - it's a great way to bond.

How do you imagine a star chef? Probably not like Fabian Spiquel. The young Australian with Swiss roots created a small but fine restaurant in Zurich together with a sommelier.

At the time, it was important for the two of them to create a restaurant that could compete with the well-known star-rated establishments in terms of cuisine, but with a much more relaxed appearance.

Dimmed lighting, simple wooden furnishings without frills, music in the background. You should feel comfortable here, enjoy the food and not feel like you are being watched. Star cuisine in a different way and for everyone.

Fabian is particularly keen on throwing away as little as possible, which is why he is always working on new ways to use leftovers from the kitchen by fermentation and thus send his guests on a new journey.

Here, all flavours are exhausted and many things taste completely different than they look at first glance, but always damn tasty. Book quickly, because this place is unfortunately no longer an insider tip.

The best of meat and wine

My last dinner in Zurich was at Smith & de Luma. Wow, what can I say about this? Except: great! In the Binz Quartier, where you mainly find craftsmen and start-ups, the steakhouse Luma with its adjoining wine shop Smith & Smith is very discreet from the outside.

The building is industrial, with grey walls, designer lamps and dark wood furniture creating a cosy, but not at all overloaded, atmosphere - after all, it's all about the food.

Those who come to the restaurant can expectmeat of the highest quality. Whether Black Angus, US beef or poultry - everything here is of the best quality and everything is homemade, from the ketchup to the chips. Don't worry, veggies are also lucky on the menu here, no one has to stay out.

The matching wine accompaniment comes from the wine shop next door, of course, and is always perfectly matched to the food. So if you're planning to visit Smith & de Luma, you should bring plenty of room in your belly. It would be a real shame to leave even a crumb behind.

Confiserie Teuscher: The best chocolates

No visit to Switzerland is complete without importing the finest chocolate. During a walk through the city, I came across the praline confectionery "Teuscher". Attracted by the somewhat unusual interior, I naturally had to take a closer look.

The finest truffles and chocolates are sold here amidst lots of kitsch, and they are now exported as far as China. For more than 70 years, over 100 different varieties have been produced in Zurich, without any additives or anything else that could distort the taste.

The chocolates have their price, but they are really worth the sin and are perfect as a gift, but also just as good to eat yourself. The shop assistants are really incredibly friendly and are happy to take the time to explain all the varieties in detail. I absolutely passed the tasting test.

By the way, while writing this article I got incredibly hungry, thanks to Zürich Tourism for the invitation to this great trip. Now I have to cook something. En Guete and see you next time.
