The Basilica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar is also known as the Basilica del Pilar for short and is located in the center of the city of Zaragoza in northeastern Spain. Legend of the Basilica del Pilar
The foundation of the Basilica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, or better known as El Pilar, dates back to an ancient legend. According to this legend, in the year 40 A.D., John the Elder was praying on the banks of the river Ebro in the city of Zaragoza when the Virgin Mary appeared to him.
The mother of Jesus was still living in Jerusalem at that time, this is her only known appearance before her ascension. Mary is said to have given John a small statue of herself and a column of jasper at that time, and to have given him the order to build a church at this place. She also already gave him the name of the church: Nuestra Señora del Pilar ("Our Lady of the Pillar").
John then built a small chapel on the very spot where the Blessed Mother had appeared to him. It was to become the first church dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Construction of the Basilica del Pilar
Over the years and centuries, many churches were built over this small chapel, each larger and more imposing than its predecessor. The current version dates from the 17th and 18th centuries, respectively. At that time, the church was planned by Felipe Sánchez y Herrera and later generously remodeled by Ventura Rodriguez. The magnificent towers at the corners of the basilica were not completed until the 20th century.
The Basilica del Pilar, a listed building, is today an enormous magnificent building on the river Ebro, which dominates the cityscape of Zaragoza. From the outside it looks slightly oriental, which is probably due to the slender towers on both sides and the large dome in the center. Around this dome are ten smaller domes, artfully decorated with blue, green, yellow and white tiles.
