Throughout its 10 years of operation, Alianza has carried out work in four major areas:

Training and Technical Assistance

As part of its training and technical assistance services, Alianza organizes national conferences and other training forums that help service providers and advocates who work with Latinas/os enhance their knowledge and skills; provides technical assistance; develops and distributes culturally and linguistically competent resource materials, and makes referrals to other agencies and services when necessary.

Community Education and Development

Alianza works to raise awareness about the devastating effect of domestic violence on Latino families and communities and provides information about existing laws, options, resources, and services. It does this through the placement of news articles, radio and televisions PSAs, radio and TV talk shows, and the hosting of community events. Alianza serves on the organizing committee of the annual NYC’s Brides’ March Against Domestic Violence.

Research

For several years, Alianza operated a small research center (El Centro) at Georgia State University, under the leadership of Dr. Julia Perilla. Through El Centro, Alianza helped to to develop and mentor students and other Latino/a researchers; maintained a repository of culturally competent literature regarding domestic violence in Latino/a communities, and promoted partnerships between academic researchers and community agencies. Alianza has also conducted national surveys and several focus groups/community assessments with survivors and service providers that has helped to guide and inform its work. It has also produced position papers, fact sheets on domestic violence in Latino communities, and summaries of research articles for posting on our website.

Public Policy

Alianza advocates for and helps to formulate policies that will prevent and help end domestic violence in Latino communities; monitors and disseminates information about the impact of domestic violence policies and legislation on Latino communities; and advocates for the allocation of adequate resources to help prevent and end domestic violence in Latino communities.

Alianza receives numerous calls weekly requesting information, seeking services, training, speakers, materials, etc. Requests for assistance include but are not limited to: statistics regarding the Latino population and DV, print materials, direct services, including shelters. Alianza has also developed a national directory of domestic violence programs that offer services in Spanish. (Resource Links)

Alianza maintains a Resource Center that includes multiple publications: conference reports, informational booklets, manuals, position papers, research summaries, brochures, and a national directory of domestic violence service programs that offer services in Spanish.
